Red, Blue and Canoe
Cranford’s Canoe Club is one of that Town’s most treasured institutions, its easy river access providing residents with recreational opportunities – and memories – for generations. Situated at Rahway River’s edge, this tightened view isolated the rhythmic line-up of green-blue canoes on the blanched wooden dock.
With the line of triangulated tips of the canoes, the composition focused on the horizontal rhythm of those shapes and the deep beams. The solid dock contrasts with the reflective water – the potential engagement of static solid things, with the river’s fluid buoyancy to provide their motion – is implied by the dividing edge. With only a glimpse of overhead flags and background trees, the out-of-sight white façade and signage of the club.
