Mark’s house

Winthrop, MA

Commissioned to depict this elegant,
classical home, I worked from many photos of its front facade. The
design’s formality suggested a straight-on view, with a very
foreshortened west-facing facade. Since the main facade only caught
minimal daylight, the homeowners suggested this dusk setting, with
Christmas decorations. The painting’s subtle colors and values show a
soft sunset light, the façade details and interior lights. The open sky
space and water background softened the home’s formality. The blue color
scheme for most of the house surfaces, the road, water and sky, were
complemented by yellows and oranges of the lights, and the sky’s warm
sunset glow.
