A spring’s morning sun inspired this backlit view of display tents for an artists’ festival, with a bird carver’s work as the secondary subject of the watercolor. The play of cooler shadow and warmer light on the tents set the approach for suggesting the transluency of the temporary tent displays.

With a topography fashioned by its surrounding ocean waters, the character of this remote outcrop of an island has been a favorite haunt of artists for centuries. The quiet solitude and simple living on Monhegan is conveyed in an overview of houses and yards and open spaces, toward the indistinct horizon of a foggy ocean.

On an overcast, intermittently drizzly day, with a practical need to protect the watercolor from rain, I happened on an adjacent picnic table under a maple tree, which offered an unusual low eye-level as well as a protective canopy.

An everyday pedestrian view of this small Centre’s iconic buildings, I was struck by this dynamic composition through the narrow frame of storefront columns. The forced perspective along the façades provided a strong rectangular exposure of the planes of the building’s shapes and cupola.
