Double Dormers

Double Dormers - watercolor architectural landscape painting by Frank Costantino

Thayer Academy

The refined geometry and proportions of Thayer Academy’s iconic main building suggested this angular composition of roof lines, projecting dormers and arched windows. The symmetry and order of the feature façade elements, in dynamic angles of perspective, presented a powerful vignette of classical architecture.

The other fascinating details of finials, decorative capstone trim, banded roof shingles, brick coursing, and striking red window frames were portrayed to maximum visual effect in this constrained composition. Dormer shadows of a late afternoon cast their own accentuating shapes onto the roof, added contrast to the defining main slope. Together, all these features contribute to the enduring power of a well-designed building.
